 Product Description

Rescuing a century old symbol of American manufacturing history from an auction or estate is one thing.  Finding a 954-1/2 Charles Parker Vise that has been restored with a new set of hand fit jaws, a new handle, and a custom built collar to tighten up backlash and hand fit for even rubbing, is not only a sentimental find, but an authentic workhorse for real hands.

Making the replacements for these unique jaws is difficult, and a set like these is rare to find. Made from tool steel (A-2) and heat treated to 54/56 Rockwell, they are much harder the the original Parker jaws. In fact, most of the original Parker jaws were soft steel and are all well worn or missing by now.  If you want to read more about how I build these jaws, then Click Here.

I've also machined the base flat. It had almost an 1/8" of casting irregularities due to the casting process, which is how you break a mounting tab when bolting it down to your bench.  The mounting holes have been counter bored to seat the base for solid installation.

I purposely left most of the scars from years past, but I did clean up the anvil area and a few dings behind the jaws, because I felt the new owner would want to leave some scars of his own. There are marks on the back of the square slider, because the previous owner used this surface as a anvil--don't do that. The spring loaded handle will not slide down and pinch your fingers, since you can adjust the tension with a twist of the screw.

This vise is ready to go to work.  It is tight.  The jaws will hold anything you grab, and they will take 1000 degrees before getting softer then 56 R/C, so do not be afraid to use a torch around them.  I do all the time building Wilton's swivel clamps.

The paint is Krylon Satin Italian Olive. It has several coats that were baked on in front of my pellet stove for 3 days.   Remember the paint can be stripped pretty easily, so if you want the steel Patina to show, then it would take about 4 hours to get you there.

I feel this classic vise revives the stories of the past, and showcases the modern craftsmanship and best practices of now. It is meant for a special buyer.  I figured shipping from past experience shipping heavy vises, so I estimate $1 a pound for shipping.  You can contact me and we can talk about shipping choices other then UPS, if you like.
