 Product Description

Rescuing a century old symbol of American manufacturing history from an auction or estate is one thing.  Finding a 973 Charles Parker Vise that has been restored with a new handle, and a custom built collar to tighten up backlash and hand fit for even rubbing, is not only a sentimental find, but an authentic workhorse for real hands.

I was going to make replacement jaws for this vise but found out the jaws were already Hard Tool Steel.  This was the first set I ever seen on a Parker, most of the jaws I have seen were soft steel. This set of jaws are in excellent shape and a new set was not needed.

I purposely left the scars from years past.  There are a few marks on the back of the square slider, because the previous owner used this surface as a anvil--don't do that. The spring loaded handle will not slide down and pinch your fingers, since you can adjust the tension with a twist of the screw. I re made the sliding button ut of Nylon, I like this material because it does not mar the handle and does a great job of braking.

I made the Collar, the original was missing, making one allowed me to make a Aluminum Bronze spacer in stead of the hard shim stock stack, I also made a offset bushing for the nut stop, I did not like the bent pin they used from the factory. Backlash is from 12 to 2 oclock. Just how I like it.  The spindle threads are a double lead 5/8;6 acme meaning the spindle has two separate threads cut at 3 threads per inch which speeds up the Dynamic movement to 3 turns for a 1" opening.

This vise is ready to go to work.  It is tight.  The jaws will hold anything you grab.  The wrench I built for the swivel lock down.  It works great, the swivel locks down with the Parker brake pad design they have used for many years.

The paint is Dupli-Color Satin Black Engine Enamel. It has 2 coats that were baked on in front of my pellet stove for 3 days.   Remember the paint can be stripped pretty easily, so if you want the steel Patina to show, then it would take about 4 hours to get you there.

I feel this classic vise revives the stories of the past, and showcases the modern craftsmanship and best practices of now. It is meant for a special buyer.  I figured shipping from past experience shipping heavy vises, so I estimate $1 a pound for shipping.  You can contact me and we can talk about shipping choices other then UPS, if you like.
