 Product Description

This Holland is now in beautiful shape, and would be a perfect size vise for a hobby bench.

The smooth hard faced jaws were not very parallel when I started restoring this vise. I set the vise up in my surface grinder and flattened the jaws so they would close like they should. I could not get a few chips out in one corner, and not knowing the steel type, I left it as is instead of adding a little weld. The hard inserts were cast in during the casting process.  Now the solid smooth jaws will hold your delicate projects with out marring and will hold firm. They still have many years of use left in them.

I focused on making new handles and a made the 1-1/8 round knob ends. The handles are made from 1144 Cold Formed CRS, which is practically unbendable.  It's the best material for handles, in my opinion. The spindle handle is 5/8 inch diameter.  After I hand made the handle knobs I then peened them in place for a permanent installation.

The swivel portion of this vise is so smooth.  I have read other Holland owners rave about that, but now I see what they mean.  I also like how the clamps and locks are designed, which is unique to Hollands. There are no cracks anywhere. Once locked down, it will not move. The three hold down tabs on the swivel base that bolts to your work bench need three 1/2 inch bolts.

Painted with Rust-Oleum Hammered Deep Green

Shipping will be through UPS. I am estimating around $50 and this has already added to the total price.

  1. When only the best will do!

Posted by Mark Dodge on 26th May 2015

I appreciate the old days. Times when manufacturers cared about the quality of the items they produced. These manufacturers built their products to last. Planned obsolescence was not in their thinking processes. Most of these manufacturers have fallen by the wayside as we have changed the way we purchase, quality is now second to price. Cheap Chinese products are now the "norm".

The old vises that Kevin saves are too important to let someone cast aside. They represent American quality at its finest.
When Kevin restores a vise it functions better than the day it left the factory. Jaws are square and plumb, and heat treated! Main screws turn with minimal effort, one finger will easily spin the jaws open or closed. You can see that Kevin cares, it's more than a job to him. His name is backing it up and he makes sure it's right before it leaves his shop.

Hollands vises are not one I normally collect, but I couldn't pass on this one!

Kevin thanks again for your great craftsmanship. Thanks to you my "new" Hollands vise will be passed on to future generations.

    Regards,
    Mark
