 Product Description

I aquired a 2" Miller Falls vise with chipped cast in jaws. I traded some work with a guy from Massachusetts for a couple vises like this one since he knew I could fix it.  I asked around before finding out it is a Miller Falls.  I have worked on many vises but never worked on one with such a tuff cast material. I swear it it Nodular Iron, I used to race Stock Cars and remembered machining Yolks and third members which were made from Nodular Iron and This vise machined like the same material.

Before removing the cast in jaws I machined the base for a easy clamp and also so the ears will not break when tightening this vise to a bench. The casted in hard jaws were chipped like I mentioned and in very rough shape, so I set the vise up in my CNC milling machine and removed them. The original jaws are very hard, that is why they chipped, they are like a piece of glass, clamping on a round bar or on the side caused these jaws to shatter.  I cut a shelf to accept new bolt on jaws. This vise comes with two sets of jaws; one smooth and one serrated.  Made from A2 Tool Steel, heatreated to 54/56 Rockwell, and finish ground flat and square. Should be the only sets you need.

I resurfaced the back stick plate and after cleaninig it up I noticed they added a hard plate to the top, 1/4 thick x 1-3/4 long and 2" wide.  One picture I added sows the two different steel to cast materials.

I also stripped and hand wire wheeled the vise body before adding Black Wax and Black Oil from Sculpt Nouveau an company in the finish business for old Patina. I did not removeany of the scars.

Next, I fabricated a new handle and custom knobs. Heated and peened them in place for a permanent install just like the original had.

The nut was tighten up to remove sloppy backlash,I then built a Aluminum Bronze Collar to replace the sloppy steel one and the backlash is from 12 o'clock to only 1 o'clock. That is tight.  I love this backlash, best I have ever done.

This 2" vise is a great vise for bench work, and swapping the jaws takes a minute. It's ready to go to work, and is almost as tight as it's first day.  The jaws will hold anything you grab.

This classic vise is an historic Miller Falls with a set of custom jaws, new handle a nice finish.  Definitely a one of a kind vise that will be a nice addition to your bench.

Shipping is through UPS at $25.0.
