  • New handle built from 1144 Cold Formed CRS, this stuff is like a spring, returns to it original shape. Never use cheater bars on all your handles.

  • Custom built swivel locks.
  • Smooth jaws treated to 56 R/C.
  • Machining the collar surface flat and parallel to the spindle shoulder. Vises not cleaned up like this have the collar only touching one area since the casting is usually drafted like molded parts. I like to machine this area on all my restorations that have a inside collar.
  • After machining the new jaw supports. The original jaws were the C type jaws.

 Product Description

This Morgan 140 is now in pretty nice shape, and would be a perfect size vise for a hobby and gun smithing bench.

The vise was used without a jaw for some time and needed repair, I set the vise up in my CNC and carved the cast steel away to create a new jaw support. I like the L type jaws you see on Starretts since they can handle some abuse. I rounded the tops to makch the vise and I believe they came out nice. The 56 Rockwell jaws are a custom made jaw from A2 Tool Steel and while I was at it I made a set of smooth jaws. They take 2 minutes to swap out in stead of using a set of copper caps that are not very parallel.

I focused on making a new handle and 1-1/4 round knob ends. The handles are made from 1144 Cold Formed CRS, which is practically unbendable.  It's the best material for handles, in my opinion. The spindle handle is 5/8 diameter the knobs are 1-1/4 oval.  After I made the handle knobs I then heated and peened them in place for a permanent installation and added bumpers to save your fingers from blisters.

The swivel portion of this vise has two locks, I made one custom locking tee to match the other and added two new swivel clamps made from the same steel as the handles.  The three hold down tabs on the swivel base that bolts to your work bench need three 1/2 inch bolts.

I machined the pocket underneath the Dynamic jaw support where the spindle collar goes perpendicular to the spindle shoulder and added a Aluminum Bronze wear ring on the other side so nothing will get damaged while rotating the spindle. The backlash is set to 30 degrees but can be tightened up more with a .015 shim added in front of the collar. I feel the backlash is pretty good. I hate a vise that takes a 1/2 turn or more before it opens, this one opens at a 25 degree turn.

Yes it is not a new vise but this vise has many years of service left, if taken care of your sons and grandsons will still be using this vise. I will add the drawing of the jaws in case you wanted a set of aluminum jaws made.

Painted with Rust-Oleum self etching primer then covered with 2 coats of Rust-Oleum Satin Lagoon and baked in the hot sun for two days before assembly.

Shipping will be through UPS. I am estimating around $65 and this has already been added to the total price.
