 Product Description

Rescuing a century old symbol of American manufacturing history from an auction or estate is one thing.  Finding a rare 106 Reed Vise that has been thoroughly restored with a new set of jaws replacing the cast in jaws, a new handle, is not only a sentimental find, but an authentic workhorse for real hands.

I left most of the scars from years past, but I did clean up the anvil area and a few dings behind the jaws, because I felt the new owner would want to leave some scars of his own. There are marks on the back of the square slider, because the previous owner used this surface as a anvil--don't do that. The square slider works fine and is not cracked like you often see on the Prentiss's.

I set the vise up in my CNC and removed the cast in hard jaws that Reed used years ago.  The jaws looked pretty good but was not parallel like I am used to. After removing the cast in jaws I fit a set of Serrated and another set of smooth jaws that fit the early C3 vises from Wilton.  The 6 x 1-1/4 x 5/8 jaws are available just in case these jaws I supplied get damaged. The 5/16 screws are easy to remove for a quick change to smooth jaws.  Both sets of jaws are 54/56 Rockwell hard and precision ground flat and parallel.

I built a new handle after boring the Meatball to the next size larger handle size.  The original 7/8 handle diameter finished up at 1" diameter.  I added a set of tear drop knobs that fit my hands well. The handle is beefy like the whole vise.  You know you are using a heavy duty vise when swinging the handle.

The nut was a replacement, the one for this vise was missing. I purchased a broken Reed 206 just for the nut.  The nut took some time to fit but it fit just right.  Just a note, the dovetail in this vise was machined and does not have a cast finish.  I could not believe that Reed would create a machine to reach in there to cut the dovetail all the way to the nut stop deep in side the Static. I made a 20 degree cone that fit over the 3/8 nut pin which was drilled and reamed at 15 degrees,  The cone came out great, much better then bending the pin to hold the nut tight.  backlash is how I like it.

This vise is ready to go to work.  It is tight.  The jaws will hold anything you grab, and they will take 1000 degrees before getting softer then 56 R/C, so do not be afraid to use a torch around them.  I do all the time building swivel clamps.

I also stripped and wire wheeled the vise body before adding Black Metal Oil from Sculpt Nouveau an company in the finish business for old Patina. I did remove some of the scars behind the jaws but did not do anything with the square slider in the back.  It has a few scars.

I feel this classic vise revives the stories of the past, and showcases the modern craftsmanship and best practices of now. It is meant for a special buyer.  I cannot calculate shipping, so you must contact me and we can talk about the choices. The $140 for shipping is an estimate only, but the vise is heavy.
