 Product Description

Here is a Stanley Sweetheart with a rare 1-15/16 jaw width. It is definitely special.  It was originally a clamp-on vise built back in the 1920's.  My idea was to change the mounting from the clamp-on the bench style, to an easier to use and more versatile swivel base that was inspired by Chas Parker. The vise is small, but the amount of work to bring it back was not.

The base is a three piece shoe brake design and was fairly easy to machine, for a 60 year old Toolmaker. The wrench ties into a wedge block to spread the two shoes to lock in on the base. I scaled down a Parker 204 swivel base and added another mounting tab so that it now has four. It is drilled and countersunk for a 31/4 inch flat head cap screw or flat head wood screws. I used a 3/8 shoulder bolt to tie in the swivel base to the static jaw support.

The custom made sets of Serrated and Smooth hard jaws Heat Treated to 54/56 R/C are custom built and not original. They are finished ground flat and square.  I had to cut the jaw pockets to accept these new jaws. When I started restoring this vise I saw the jaws faces were smooth and not in very good condition and this vise did not have the hard cast in jaws like others.  I set the vise up in my CNC Milling machine and machined the jaw pockets with a ledge that would support the jaws, then drilled and tapped 6:32 threads for the short head cap screws.

Next, I focused on making new spindle handles.  I made the 7/16 round knob ends and peened them on to a 9/32 spindle handle. The handles are made from O-1 Tool Steel, which is not the strongest material for handles, but was all I could find in 9/32 diameter.  It will work fine because the new owner will NOT use a pipe to tighten the jaws on something.

I also tightened up the backlash by remaking the collar shim. You can see in the pictures that I built thicker ones out of bronze. This allowed the vise to be a little tighter and have less backlash. I also added a block to the spindle nut pin to keep the nut from moving forward and backwards. You can see these additions in my pictures.

Painted with Valspar Satin Leafy Rise.  This Stanley Sweetheart is now ready for years of solid service.
