 Product Description

This big 500S Vise is the beginning of a series I am excited to work on. You'll need to make room on your bench for this one.

Every restoration has a story...This one came to me pretty rough looking, but after taking it apart I could see that the insides were in great shape. The nut and spindle threads show some wear from the last 37 years, but I'd guess they have at least 50 more to give.

The previous owners were a little crazy with the angle grinder and put marks on the outside.  I used my TIG welder to sharpen up the corners and fill in some grinder marks, but so you know, I never use epoxy or body filler on my restores.  The serrated 5 x 1-1/4 x 5/8 jaws are new, and I trued up the jaw faces on my milling machine so the jaws are  parallel to each other. I would be happy to include a smooth set at a 15% discount, if you need them.

Before adding a new custom built End Cap I replaced the two 1/4 inch diameter pins pressed in the sides holding the end cap and nut. I added a set screw with the ends machined down to fit the 1/4 reamed hole.  The original pins were pressed in and must have slipped out since the original owner staked the pin in place. I set the vise up in my milling machine and replaced the pin with a threaded insert. Look HERE for how I did it.

I remachined and repositioned the groove in the Spindle that the Horseshoe Washer rides in becuase I personally like vises with minimal backlash.  This vise now has very little; just 12 to 2 o'clock, so I'm real happy with the fix. I also installed a new custom made Horseshoe Washer 2-7/8 x 1/4 made from A2 Tool Steel and precision ground flat.

The Handle was replaced with an upgraded steel, and I really took the time to make it work for this size vise because the handle material is that important.  Cold Formed 1144 CRS is perfect for handles, but Wilton used 11/16 (.687) bar stock, which is a size that I cannot find in 1144.  That meant I had to bore the spindle out to accept the larger 3/4 diameter size. I peened the Custom Made Knobs in place for a permentant install then added a set of Bumpers to save your fingers.

Then I surface ground the anvil so you can add your own scars.  It wasn't bad and did not take much to clean up.  I also removed some more scars before painting, but left most since it is part of the character of this great older vise. I primed it with Rust-oleum Self Etching primer and then painted it with Rust-oleum Verde Green paint, which is very close match to the original paint.

I hope the new owner will add his own scars to the long history of this restored Wilton 500S Bench Vise.
